Spotify is heavily investing in video podcasts

Spotify, having invested over $1 billion in podcast assets, faced skepticism from investors, laid off numerous podcasting employees, and parted ways with its primary podcasting chief. However, the company is now focusing on its future plans: more video, more consolidation, and more prominent names in podcasting.

At the Stream On event in Los Angeles, Julie McNamara, the head of global podcast studios at Spotify, introduced new video podcasts to appeal to younger listeners. Markiplier, a popular gaming YouTuber, is exclusively bringing video episodes of Distractable, which ranks 36 on Spotify’s top podcast chart, to the platform. In addition, the second season of the Spotify original Forbidden Fruits with Julia Fox is going video, likely inspired by the viral uncuh jams moment of Call Her Daddy.

McNamara believes that Spotify’s top position with younger listeners makes video a significant part of its future. She stated that video podcasting is one of the fastest-growing areas of podcasting and expects the growth to continue, with the platform currently having 70,000 video creators and more on the way.

Spotify’s new homepage is borrowing from TikTok’s playbook by featuring clips of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. While audio-only podcasts are included in this new feed, video podcasts are better suited for it.

Spotify is attempting to get more video podcasts on its platform. Soon, anyone who signs up for Spotify for Podcasters will be able to publish video podcasts, a feature that was formerly reserved for Anchor users.

Anchor, the DIY podcast publisher that Spotify acquired in 2019, is reportedly falling by the wayside. Despite its strong brand recognition, it appears to be integrated into Spotify for Podcasters. The Anchor app was rebranded as Spotify for Podcasters on Apple and Google’s app stores ahead of the event. Maya Prohovnik, the podcast product head, confirmed the integration at the event and stated that Megaphone, which caters to professional podcast publishers, would join Spotify for Podcasters in the future.

Spotify is also introducing an autoplay function for podcasts, which will play another episode immediately after you finish listening to one. Additionally, it is collaborating with Patreon to allow users to add shows that Patreon creators make exclusive to their subscribers, keeping listeners engaged with podcasts.
